After studying at Juilliard, her main focus was chamber music and string quartets. Then more than a decade with the "Arpeggione Quartet" considerably widened her musical horizons and reshaped her approach to the cello taking her seamlessly into the world of improvisation, theatre and dance. The relationship between the physical gesture and musical energy is, for her, vital and it is this concept which lies at the heart of her numerous courses and workshops which focus on bodily contol, incorporating Alexander technique and Tai chi chuan. She has an impressive recording history with ECM, Harmonia Mundi and other labels. Her ongoing exploration of the duo form led to the cello/bass clarinet improvisations with Sylvain Kassap available on Cézame.
